Child Benefit Tips Most Parents Miss

1. Pension Credits (worth £6,800+)

If one parent doesn't work (or earns under the NI threshold), claiming Child Benefit gives them National Insurance credits. Over 16 years, this adds ~£6,800 to their State Pension. This is the #1 reason to always claim, even if HICBC takes 100% of the cash back.

2. Backdate Up to 3 Months

If you forgot to claim when your child was born, you can backdate up to 3 months. Don't delay - you can't backdate further than that.

3. Claim for Children Up to 20

Child Benefit continues until the child turns 16, or up to 20 if they're in approved education or training (A-levels, BTECs, apprenticeships). Many parents stop claiming at 16 unnecessarily.

4. Transfer NI Credits to Grandparents

If a grandparent regularly looks after your child while you work, you can transfer your NI credits to them using form CA9176. This can boost their State Pension if they're under pension age.

5. Interaction with Universal Credit

Child Benefit is not counted as income for Universal Credit purposes. You get both - they don't reduce each other. Always claim both if eligible.
